Once you've got your wristband for the Fayre, you can wonder in and out of the castle as you please, so why not pop over to the Castle Lodge Buttery? They're just across the road from the castle, and this year they've transformed into a bustling medieval café, serving winter warming dishes and hot drinks late into the evening.

Why not go and defrost with them from 4pm on Saturday, and await the castle grand reopening at 6pm.

You can also visist their medieval soup kitchen out and about in the town or treat yourself to the truly medieval taste of potage located just outside the café.

A fiery evening of medieval revelry

We're always excited about the evening opening over the Medieval Fayre weekend. There's something childishly exciting about being in the castle after dark. The site's filled with music, mulled wine and the masses, and the whole place really comes to life.

This year, we're introducing something a little extra to add to the atmosphere. A first for Ludlow castle, we're working with a team who have created projections and illusions to bring the castle to life with light. It should be a fantastic evening as the stalls reopen and the castle heads back into Medieval, firey splendour. We hope you can join us!

Prices are the same as the daytime session. However, if you've been to the saturday day, then re-entry is just £2 for all ages.

Gone Green, Going Greener - Zero Wasting the Medieval Fayre

We’ve always kept the environment in mind when planning the Fayre, but this year we’re taking it a step further. Whereas in the past we’ve worked to minimise our impact on the castle, this year we’re starting the process of reducing that impact to zero in terms of the waste created. Working with Cwm Harry, a Powys-based community group who recently won Cylch (Wales Community Recycling Network) Community Recycler of the Year award for their Zero Waste project in Presteigne, which was funded by Powys County Council and Welsh government, we’re taking the first steps towards making the Medieval Fayre the first Zero Waste event in Ludlow. We’ll be using and supporting the best Cwm Harry has to offer, working with the experts to bring you a greener, lighter impact event.

It’s a long-term process, not a short-term fix. For the first step this year, Cwm Harry will perform a Waste Audit, removing as much recyclable waste as we can and planning towards making 2012 our first Zero Waste year. With our wide range of exhibitors, covering everything you need for your traditional Christmas, from gifts to Mulled wine, there are a lot of options and avenues to explore. Working with Cwm Harry, we’ll make sure all the green possibilities are taken full advantage of.

Whether it’s warming your hands on a delicious Welsh Oggie, or peeling freshly roasted chestnuts, we want to make sure that exhibitors and visitors alike can be sure that they’re enjoying an event that not only works towards minimising its impact on the environment, but works with, and supports, local social enterprise in the process.

Costumes!

Costumes costumes costumes are the talk of the day here. It's monks cloaks and hoods galore as we turn our Rag Market booty into stewards costumes. Poor little sewing machine...

At the other end of the scale, St. Nicholas' costume got a fantastic boost courtesy of Watson and Thornton's in Shrewsbury http://www.watsonandthornton.co.uk/. We wandered in looking for metres and metres of green material, and walked out with the most beautiful, rich green, white fur trimmed costume. It was literally a here's one we made earlier! Ridiculous luck of that aside, we're taking some of our gorgeous fabrics from the Rag Market (http://twitter.com//LudlowMedieval has some phoots) and embelishing. St. Nic's not going to know what hit him.....photos to come!

One of the things we love to do is wreath his fur 'crown' with holly. With this weird autumn we're having, most of the holly here is out already, I hope there's some left by the end of November! Fingers crossed...

St. Nicholas

Not that we want to bother him while he's on his rest-of-the-year holidays, but we're thinking St. Nic might be in need of a new outfit, the medieval fashion world moves fast. So we're going to be scouring the internet, the libraries and the rag market in search of inspiration….and we’ll be making a mini video of it as we go! Expect a lot of cursing at sewing machines, but we’re sure the final result will be worthy of St. Nic and his glowing grotto, one of our favourite parts of the Fayre to create. Stay tuned!
